POLYSTYRENE CUPS MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

Ubiquitously popular polystyrene (styrofoam) drinking cups may be irreversibly hazardous to both users' health and the environment. Polystyrene drinking cups are made of material called styrene.

The styrene which accumulates in the human body may result in: damage to the nervous system, depression, sleep disorders, Parkinson’s disease, and in certain cases cancer. The styrene material in cups dissolves and mixes with the drink and thereby becomes hazardous to the drinker. The higher the temperature of the drink, the higher the rate of styrene migration from cup to drink. The highest rate of styrene migration is in cups of hot tea with lemon. Scientific research reveals that in 100% of the cases of persons drinking from polystyrene cups, a high and even dangerous level of styrene was found in their bodies. The damage is accumulative and it increases as use of polystyrene cups increases.

The National Institute for Cancer Research in France resolved to change the classification of styrene to be classified as a material which may cause cancer. Polystyrene cups extremely damage the planet earth upon which we live, and received the worst grades for their inability to be recycled. Research has proven that even after 500 years, these cups will survive and will not breakdown.

Research has proven that un-recyclable materials cause the deaths of 1,000,000 seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals every year.

Un-recyclable polystyrene cups when burned damage the earth's ozone layer. Polystyrene cups cause an increase in waste, and an inability of re-cycling other waste materials as a result of their being mixed with paper in trash cans.

DISARMING THE HEALTH TIME BOMB

Australia's best-known health and lifestyle medico, Dr. John Tickell studied the FreshCUP unit in-depth.

"Bacteriological inspection shows that cups washed or dried using cloths and towels can merely transfer bacteria from one cup to another and from one office person to the next - a medical time bomb."

"Laboratory experiments have shown that after washing cups in FreshCUP, no bacteria colonies were found and the cups were clean, sanitized, germ-free and ready for use - a real health plus, with enormous potential to avoid sickness and lost work hours."

TURNING CLEANLINESS INTO PROFIT: SANITIZES & SHINES 200 CUPS/HOUR

Bottled water executives recognize that distribution of a consumable such as good quality water immediately translates into profit. With water resources consistently decreasing in quality, the cups we use to drink the water are also starting to become an issue. Paper cone cups are designed for not standing, holding a small amount of water and they are easy to crumple i.e. turn into trash. Other types of disposable cups are even worse, and contribute to the pollution of our planet or are health hazards (i.e. polystyrene). In today's environmentally aware world, certain countries have already legislated anti-disposable cup laws and taxes, or have declared certain cups as hazardous to your health. FreshCUP's 200 cup/hour capacity or 2-3 cups in 30 seconds is the answer to the quality of life in the office and environment while safeguarding our health. It is the "microwave" of dishwashers who take a long time to fill up, and also a long time to run. With FreshCUP you get clean cups right away. Why wait?

Users of water coolers which also dispense hot water need clean cups. When important guests suddenly visit an office and coffee or tea is offered, FreshCUP provides the quick 30 second quality solution.

Bottled water executives recognize that distribution of a consumable such as FreshCUP's patented detergent in refillable cartridges, immediately translates into additional profit from their current customer base. It's a win/win/win situation for all.

WATCH OUT… PLASTIC CUPS ARE OUT
(reprinted from "Facilities Management" magazine UK, 1999)

If you are running an office that uses plastic cups watch out. You are about to get taxed!

Last month plastic cup manufacturers imposed a voluntary 0.01p per cup environmental tax on plastic cups sold in the UK2. The move is aimed at tackling the environmental problem caused by plastic cups and the money will be used to finance recycling schemes that the industry has introduced.

The tax could raise as much as £50,000,000 per year for the recycling schemes.

The government imposes a tax of 4 pfennigs per cup (approximately 1.37p), which is more than the cost of a plastic cup in the UK. The European Commission currently has a consultation document that proposes similar taxes throughout Europe.

With the cost of plastic cups increasing by so much many Facility Managers will be considering getting rid of them completely and using mugs and glasses.

The problem of course is that no one wants to wash up and the kitchen gets very unhygienic as dirty cups mount up. By lunchtime you have no clean cups left and the cleaner doesn't arrive until the evening. The cleaner then spends so much time washing up dirty mugs that they have no time to clean the office.

Waterlogic feel that they have the solution. The new FreshCUP system launched in the UK this month will wash two mugs or three cups at a time and takes only 30 seconds. The continuous option allows you to wash between 240 and 360 mugs, cups or glasses per hour. This makes the system economical for small and large washes.

FreshCUP DETERGENTS - FREEZE AND THAW TEST
January 13, 2000

The test was conducted according to the ASTM procedures for Detergents and cosmetics liquid.

  1. Both liquids were heated to 40ºc for 24 hours
  2. Both liquids were cooled down to -5ºc for 24 hours

This cycle was repeated 3 times. (i.e. 3 times at 40ºc and 3 times at -5ºc)

The 2 detergents were checked before and after the "Freeze and Thaw" test

The results were as follows:

The detergents froze at about -5ºc and converted into clear liquid when warmed up (as happens with most normal aqueous liquid detergents).
